Compassion - Bodhi Seed - Irish Penal Chaplet

Compassion - Bodhi Seed - Irish Penal Chaplet

"Mere sitting at home and meditating on the divine presence is not enough for our time. We have to come to the end of a long journey and see that the stranger we meet there is no other than ourselves — which is the same as saying that we find Christ in him."

— Fr. Thomas Merton, Trappist monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani

This chaplet was inspired by the dialogues between Thomas Merton and Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama — and by their shared dedication to interfaith dialogue and to deepening compassion.

The beautiful openwork Coptic cross symbolizes open-heartedness, and the most profound depths of compassion. It is hand-cast from a 19th century Ethiopian original, in solid bronze.

The ten very large Bodhi seeds — traditional Buddhist prayer beads — are interspersed with beads of golden horn and beads of solid brass. Handling this chaplet is a fantastic tactile experience.

The solid bronze ring of the chaplet is cast by hand from a Celtic antique.

Chaplets of this configuration are known as Irish Penal Chaplets. They can easily be used to keep count of the prayers of a full five decade rosary, by looping the ring over one thumb and praying one decade, then moving the ring to each finger in turn, praying one decade at each position.
