Lent - variation 2 - Lavastone

"There is not, never has been,
and never will be a single human being
for whom Christ did not suffer."
— Catechism of the Catholic Church, 605

We had the Lenten journey in mind when we made this rosary.

The Coptic cross is cast from a 19th century Ethiopian original, in solid bronze. The rosary center is hand-cast from a vintage Afghan piece.

The Paters are Greek pewter, copper dipped, antiqued, and flecked with verdigris. Alongside the Paters are various small beads in mottled old-golds and berry-purples; these are high-fired Greek ceramic.

The Aves are lavastone, with natural pits and pocks that formed as the molten stone cooled.

Separating the Aves are small beads with a finish reminiscent of raku pottery — in strong purples, blues, and sage greens; these are Japanese matte glass. Here and there are beads of matte gold glass, and small beads of ebony.
